Rosemary’s Baby, Roman Polanski’s masterpiece of paranoia, power, and satanic intrigue, redefined horror back in 1968. As determined to innovate as it was to frighten, the film forwent horror cliches and situated its story in a very real (and very imposing) New York apartment complex, juxtaposing the everyday with the intensely troubling psychological terror that befalls Mia Farrow’s titular character.
Its themes of feminism, pregnancy-related fear and manipulation were groundbreaking back in the day and remain relevant today, rendering the film’s satanic threat much more than a generic supernatural evil. Rosemary’s Baby showed that societal and existential anxieties had a place in horror, paving the way for the major horror pictures of the ’70s – The Exorcist, The Omen – as well as modern highlights like Hereditary and Get Out. It’s hard to think of a more seminal film in the horror genre than Rosemary’s Baby – its iconography, style and stature arguably having outlived those of its peers.
To honor this great work, we’ve chosen it as the featured film for the Halloween edition of Cinecenter Aperitivo, on October 30. As usual, make sure you show up in time to enjoy Happy Hour, including discounted drinks and the chance to play our famous film quiz….
