Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, known for Oscar-winning Das Leben der Anderen, has now signed for directing Werk ohne Autor (Never Look Away). A historical epic based on the life of painter Gerhard Richter.
Kurt (Tom Schilling) grew up in Germany during the Second World War. The horrors that took place under Hitler’s regime also affect his personal life. After the war he went to the art academy in East Germany, where he met Elisabeth (Paula Beer). It was immediately love at first sight. Elisabeth’s father, Professor Seeband (Sebastian Koch), is not impressed by Kurt and prefers not to keep in touch. The two men are connected by events from the past. The dubious role that Seeband played during the Second World War, haunts him as a shadow. If Kurt discovers himself and the true art, this also has implications for Seeband.
Werk ohne Autor has received an Oscar nomination for both Best Foreign Film and Best Camera Work.
