Il Traditore (The Traitor) is a film about Tommaso Buscetta, prime figure in the Sicilian mafia and the so called “boss of the two worlds”. He would become the first mafia informant in Sicily 1980’s.
In the early 1980s, the peace within the Sicilian mafia, the Cosa Nostra, turns out to be short-lived. As a result, Tommaso Buscetta, a high-ranking member of the Cosa Nostra, goes into hiding in Brazil. Meanwhile, his confidants are being murdered one by one.
When Buscetta is eventually arrested and extradited to Italy, he makes a decision that will change history: he will be the first to break the omertà (obligation to remain silent). Il traditore tells the true story behind the Maxi trial (1986-1992) against the mafia in Palermo. The trial proved the existence of the Cosa Nostra.
Director Bellochio was selected for the Cannes Film Festival competition with Il Traditore. The film is now a major hit in Italy.
