Piranhas follows a group of 15-year-old boys from the Sanità neighborhood in Naples. They’re making their way into the city’s world of crime. Longing for for money and power, they think that crime can be their only chance of life.

Piranhas is based on the novel La paranza dei bamibini (The Children in the Trawl Nets). The title refers to the name of a legal investigation into the children used by the Camorra as adults.

The successful Neapolitan writer Roberto Saviano wrote the book and the screenplay for the film. Roberto Saviano’s debut novel Gomorra has sold 10 million copies worldwide and he has been living in hiding and being heavily protected for more than ten years because of this book.

This shocking portrait experienced the world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival 2019 and won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay.
