Martin Margiela: In His Own Words is an intimate portrait of one of the most innovative and influential fashion designers of his time.

During a twenty-year period encompassing no less than 41 collections, Margiela caused a signigicant stir in the fashion world. All without ever exchanging so much as a word with the press and without ever showing his face to the public. Margiela abhorred the notion of going through life as a ‘celebrity’ – the fashion was key, not his persona.

Now, for the first time, Margiela lifts the curtain to give us some insight into his life, his work and his youth. His hands and voice guide us through his childhood and early studies to establishing his fashion house and, eventually, his sudden departure from the fashion scene. Part of the mystery remains in this documentary – we still don’t get to see Margiela’s face.

Various major players in the fashion share their thoughts on Margiela, from Jean-Paul Gaultier to Lidewij Edelkoort. Flemish band dEUS provide the thrilling soundtrack.
