In this peerless waltz of love, the performances and music combine to form a rhythmic flow that will allow you to bear witness to deep, unspeakable feelings.
The invisible dance is performed by Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) and Ms. Chan (Maggie Cheung), who happen to be neighbors in an apartment complex in 1960s Hong Kong. As their spouses are seemingly having an affair, the two keep finding excuses to comfort each other. Love flares up, but the accompanying feelings are kept at bay.
In The Mood for Love was in competition for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2000. The film received special awards for cinematography and editing. Tony Leung received the award for Best Actor. The stylish production design, Leung’s spotless appearance and Maggie Cheung’s beauty – both actors excel in their roles – all contribute to the film’s monumental aesthetic. The same goes for the soundtrack, featuring crooner Nat King Cole. De Filmkrant called In The Mood for Love the ultimate romance.
