Capharnaüm is the new film by director Nadine Labaki (Caramel) and is a penetrating portrait of parenthood and survival in the poorest neighborhoods of Lebanon, told through the eyes of a child.
Zain (Zain Al Rafeea) spends his days in the streets of the Lebanese capital Beirut. As the oldest child in the family, it is his job to work to help maintain the family. When his sister is married off to an older local greengrocer, Zain decides to run away from home. This leads to an incredible road trip, with new friendships and decisive choices.
Capharnaüm premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize. The cast mostly consists of amateur actors and Zain Al Rafeea in particular is praised for his strong acting performances: “a startling, unforgettable presence”, says Vulture.
