Eleven year-old Kenza (Tiara Richards) lives with her father Ouira (Everon Jackson Hooi) and grandfather Weljo (Felix de Rooy) on an auto junkyard on the inner island of Curaçao.
The two men are polar opposites: Ouira is a resolute, rational police officer while Weljo identifies with the island’s original inhabitants and its spiritual qualities. When the relationship between the two reaches a boiling point, the willful and determined Kenza strives to find her own place between these two extremes. Ouira’s down-to-earth mentality no longer provides her with everything she needs and she starts to open up to her grandfather’s mystical and soothing traditions.
Buladó was directed by Eché Janga, who wrote the script with Esther Duysker. The story is set in Band’abou Curaçao and is partly based on a local slave’s tale. By transporting this story to the big screen, an ancient storytelling tradition lives on…
