In 2001, a mining town northwest of China threatens to become a ghost town. It’s here where the young Qiao lives, a tough woman who has lost her heart to local gang Bin. When Bin is ambushed, Qiao saves him by firing an illegal firearm. She is sentenced to five years in prison. At the moment she is released, she immediately goes looking for Bin to rebuild their old life. But is everything still the same as before? The violent relationship between Qiao and Bin unfolds between 2001 and 2017, giving director Jia Zhangke the opportunity to present a chronicle of contemporary China in the background.

Zhao Tao and Liao Fan play the lead roles in Ash is Purest White, the drama of Jia Zhang-Ke (Mountains May Depart, A Touch Of Sin), which played in the Cannes main competition.
